Kindergartners at West Point ES Connect Globally Through Letters and Maps
Kindergarten students at West Point Elementary School recently completed a geography project that connected classroom lessons to personal family ties around the globe, culminating in handwritten letters mailed to loved ones.
The unit explored the question, "Where is my place in the world?" Students selected a grandparent, family friend or distant relative and composed personal letters, introducing many to the process of physical mail for the first time.
A highlight was a classroom visit from the local postmaster, who explained how the postal system delivers messages across oceans and answered student questions, including "How do letters go over the water?" and "What happens if a truck doesn’t work?" The postmaster then collected the letters for delivery.
As replies arrived from locations in New York, Texas and as far as Taiwan, students marked them on U.S. and world maps, blending social studies, literacy and community involvement.
The project underscores DoWEA's commitment to hands-on learning that prepares military-connected children for an interconnected world.
